For the past year, River Lang has been grieving the loss of his best friend Dylan. Everyday, he has to pass the Billboard that has made Dylan into a cautionary tale and nothing more than a statistic. So one day he decides to "improve" the billboard. River is sure that Dylan would find it hilarious, but some classmates don't feel the same and River is blackmailed into joining a research study, the Affinity Trials, for teens who are "struggling socially". During the Trials, River has to face his grief, an ex-best friend (and Dylan's former girlfriend), and he meets an interesting jock from another school who begins to remind him of Dylan. As the Trials progress, bizarre developments begin to make the participants wonder what is actually being studied...
